The 15th International Ergonomics Conference on ‘Humanizing Work and Work Environment’ began today with the inaugural function at the J N Medical College Auditorium in the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). The conference, which is organised by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Zakir Hussain College of Engineering and Technology (ZHCET), AMU will conclude on December 10, 2017.
Presiding over the function, AMU Vice Chancellor, Professor Tariq Mansoor pointed out that the topic of the conference is not only specific to Mechanical Engineering but it is equally important to all streams. He added that there is a need of physical and emotional safety in work places everywhere.
Speaking particularly on the safety of women in work places, the Vice Chancellor said that women should be treated with due respect, decency and dignity at the workplaces as they have a right to a safe environment, free from harassment.
Prof Mansoor further said that safety professionals must ensure all workers are safe, respected and protected and special measures should be taken in cases of disabled employees. He added that the work places in western countries are very conscious about the safety of employees with disabilities.
The Vice Chancellor also said that there is a need to have new courses in the Faculty of Engineering. “We have a very reputed engineering college with one of the biggest departments in the university. However, we need to move forward by introducing courses on solar energy, artificial intelligence and industrial safety among other areas,” said the Vice Chancellor.
Prof Arun Garg (University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, USA), who was conferred with the ‘Life-time Achievement Award’ for his contribution in the area of ergonomics could not attend the conference due to poor health. However, Prof Garg in a special message has stated that he has warm memories of the earlier editions of the conference. He wished AMU and its Department of Mechanical Engineering the best for the conference.
The chief-guest, Prof Louis E Freund (San Jose University, USA) said that he is honoured to have been invited in conference. Prof Freund further said that he will be speaking on employee safety issues in the industry, importance of human factors and ergonomics during the three-day conference.
Prof Zakwan Ahmad (Director General-R&M & Impl, Defense Research and Development Organisation—DRDO) said that that the work environment is changing rapidly. “Today productivity depends on the comfort level of employees,” he added.
Prof A K Ganguli (President, Indian Society of Ergonomics) said that ‘Humanizing Work and Work Environment’ conference has made an amazing journey from its first edition in 2001 at Mumbai to AMU in 2017. “In these years, this conference has served as a major forum for the exchange of ideas concerning the improvement in work and work environment,” said Prof Ganguli.
Prof M M Sufiyan Beg (Principal, ZHCET) said that the AMU engineering college provides state-of- art teaching-learning process, strengthen learning outcomes, employability of the graduates, enhancement of R&D, faculty and staff development, enhanced interaction with industry, institutional reforms, academic support for weak students and designing courses to meet the global needs. He added that ZHCET is one of the prestigious engineering colleges of the country.
Stating that a ‘happy labour works well’, Prof Altamush Siddiqui (Chairperson, Department of Mechanical Engineering) pointed out that employers must create a safe and healthy workplace for all employees as they have a right to work in an environment free from all hazards.
The Vice Chancellor and the guests released a souvenir on the proceedings of the conference. Meanwhile, the guests also received mementoes.
Prof M Muzammil (Co-cordinator) delivered the welcome address. Prof Abid Ali Khan (Coordinator) proposed the vote of thanks. Dr Faisal Hasan (Co-cordinator) was also present on the occasion.

Prof V Balasubramanium (IIT Madras), Prof Dhurjati Majumdar (MRU), Prof C B Mayhorn (USA), Prof Victor Paquet (USA), Prof B J Martin (USA), Prof Deb K Chakraborty (IIT Guwahati), Prof Jose Orlando Gomes (Brazil) and Prof Anirudha Joshi (IIT Bombay) will deliver the keynote addresses.
